This is a digital copy of a book that was preserved for generations on library shelves before it was carefully scanned by Google as part of a project

to make the world's books discoverable online.

It has survived long enough for the copyright to expire and the book to enter the public domain. A public domain book is one that was never subject

to copyright or whose legal copyright term has expired. Whether a book is in the public domain may vary country to country. Public domain books

are our gateways to the past, representing a wealth of history, culture and knowledge that's often difficult to discover.

Marks, notations and other maiginalia present in the original volume will appear in this file - a reminder of this book's long journey from the

publisher to a library and finally to you.

Iiom 3 Oct, I707 ; summoned by w the house ol peers diirincliiB fatlier'a lifetime, as Baron Dunottt 1 sncceeded kia father, Alexander, the late duke, 16 Feb. ISlSf . married, 2G April 1810, Susan- Euphemia, da. of William Bei^ I ford, of Fonthin, co. Wilts, esq. (by Catherine Gordon, do. oC J Charles, lOth eacl of Aboyne), ajid lias issue, 1. WiLtiiM.Air- . thont-Abchihalo, Marquess of Dooglas, 6. 16 Feb. 1811 ; Suian, 6. 9 June 1Q14.

The origin of the illustrious family of Hamilton has been trac by Crawford, Douglas, and other Scotch genealogists, to a JflUii . 4b Hanmldim (so aumanied from the place of his btrdi, the manor J

of Hanieldon, cd. Leicester), whom they asaert to have been

Iannger Boa ofRobert de Bellouiont, 3d earl of l^cester, and te HVB hod B son, Gilbert, who, having killed John te Despencer, a favourite officer about tbe court of king Edward IL, fled from the apprehended Vengeancs of that monarch i and being; donety pur- sued into a wood, he aud bin lervaut changed ctdthes with two weodcutters, and, taking their saw, were cutting through an oak tree when their pursuers passed by. Perceiving his servant take notice of them, he hastily cried out to him, "TBnouan ("which word, with the oak and law dirough it, he took for bis motto and creat, in memory of his happy deliverance. This detail is, how- ever, liable to several objections. Neither Dugdale, nor any other of the English genealogists, makes mention of tbe descent of the Hamiltong from tbe earlS of Leicester. According to them, Robert, 3d earl, had3 song, Robert, 4th earl, whod. without issue in 1204; Roger, bishop of St. Andrew's, and chancellor of Scotland, whoi/. in 1202; and WiUiaoi, a leper, ftmnder of the hospital of St- Leonard, at Leicester. That this William died before his eldest brother without issue, is erident, from the circumstance of the great inheritance of the family being divided, on tbe death of the 4th earl, between bis sisters ; and it is further proved liv a deed of Petronella, widow of the 3d earl, that the surname of her son, Williun, was not Hamilton, but de Briloiio. It is, therefore, clear that he was not the progenitor of tbe family of Haniilu>n, whose descent, if derived from the earis (if Leieester at nil (as indeed the similarity of arms, und tiie concurring testiniony of Beveral authors, seem to render probable), must have been from one of tbe younger sons Of the first or second earL We therefore commence our account of the funily with
